We are a group of volunteer instructors who enjoy teaching and training in the art of traditional Shotokan Karate as passed on by the founder of modern Karate, Gichin Funakoshi. We believe in keeping alive the cultural aspects of karate both in the way we train and in the way we carry ourselves inside and outside the dojo.

Karate is not a quick self-defense course. It is a lifelong practice that rewards patience, consistency, and discipline. Many of our students have trained for years and continue to improve their technique, confidence, and focus.

Karate classes for kids, teens, and adults

Our classes are designed for a wide range of ages and experience levels. We offer kids karate in Surrey, teen karate in Vancouver, and adult Shotokan classes in Coquitlam, with instruction that emphasizes proper fundamentals, safe progression, and respectful training culture.

For the first couple of years, students build a foundation in Kihon, the basics of karate. These movements form the basis of everything that follows, including Kata and Kumite. This foundation is essential for improving technique, coordination, confidence, and martial skill.

Your training will also include Kata, which is a series of prescribed karate movements designed to build balance, timing, breathing, and application. Working with a partner in Kumite helps students learn practical skills within a safe and controlled environment.

We are fortunate to have a large number of black belts training with us. Their responsibility is to model correct karate spirit, attitude, and respect, helping newcomers feel welcome while maintaining a strong standard of training.

Our guiding principles

Seek perfection of character. Be faithful. Endeavour. Respect others. Refrain from violent behaviour.
