Kihon means “basics” or fundamentals”.
The term is used to describe the practice and repetition of the basic techniques of karate.
Kihon can be performed individually or in large groups.  By organizing different Kihon techniques into sequences, Kata is created.
When students learn to put different Kihon techniques to another person, Kumite is born.
The instructors at Downtown Shotokan Karate spend a great deal of time teaching their students Kihon, until it is perfected.  It is vital to the development of good karate technique.  All other aspects of your karate will improve with good Kihon skills.
